Miss Hewins' work was not limited to Hartford. She was an early member of the American Library Association (ALA), and gave talks about children's libraries. She was one of the founders of the children's section of the ALA. She published essays, articles, and speeches (i.e. The Atlantic, January 1888). She gave talks at meetings and conferences about children's libraries. Caroline also sent surveys to other librarians asking what they were doing to encourage children's reading. The results were varying. Some libraries were just starting a children's room. She highly encouraged development of children's rooms, and offered advice.
